Opportunistic Unpatriotic Republicans Cross the Line

By Frank Schaeffer (with a little help from Rachel Maddow)

I am the father of a Marine who served his country with honor in Afghanistan and Iraq. In that role -- as part of the military family -- I call on anyone who cares about this country to speak out against the Republican Party, its leaders and followers and tell the truth: they are trying to cash in on the Detroit/terror attempt in a way that has clearly crossed a line. They are over the line of not just good taste, but into an area that has to be called what it is: unpatriotic, un-American cynicism on a new level.

I was going to write a post on this but Rachel Maddow said it better on MSNBC last night...

Please watch and pass on. One last thing: why is Rachel Maddow the only journalist who seems to be doing her job on this (and so many other matters!) of actually fact-checking?

Rachel makes some excellent points here and I have to say she is right. It is high time that we take a look at the facts and quit listening to the Republican spin doctors who who rather thrash the President. We need to be looking how to make peace, as Christ taught us,not try to score talking points for "our side". Especially if that side really isn't on God's side or the side of PEACE. Happy New Years to you and yours Frank

Rachel Maddow is great! I love this gem: The Republicans have a list of 500,000 names that is so unwieldy that it targets the late Senator Edward Kennedy and some Alaskan Senator's wife to make it difficult for THEM to board planes but can't function properly to keep ACTUAL terrorists off of ACTUAl planes. Maddow's comments are full of gems like that, and even better ones!

Hi Karen: I agree, as far as I'm concerned I'd like to see her as the white House Press Secretary and/or chairperson of the Democratic Party!

Frank, thanks for keeping us informed. I am an award winning Vietnam Veteran, and knew when we went flying into Iraq that something was seriously wrong. The average citizen however, doesn't have a clue and is mis-led by the Rt wing religious fanatics who back these criminals. As far as I am concerned the Republican's are now armed and dangerous, and should be kept under surveilance.

Actually, I think we need to keep Rachel right where she is. Who else do we have in the media with the backbone to challenge Republican lies and propaganda? Certainly not CBS, NBC or ABC. Certainly not the print media - only about three.

I may be missing something here, but I did not get the sense Cheney was trying to argue point blank against giving terrorists trials. I guess that should be to his credit.

Frank

You cannot call someone "unpatriotic" and then complain when they call you and your unpatriotic as well.

Izgad: My objection, among several, to Cheney's comments, is that he absolutely misrepresented the facts. In other words, he lied. It was a deliberate attempt to undermine the president of the United States in a time of crisis. I call this treason.

After 9/11, the Democrats and the American people stood behind Bush and offered no criticism. Personally, I felt he seized the moment for political gain at the expense of the victims and their families. That he could do something so callous is borne out by the way he reacted to Katrina victims - by not acting.

Anyway, to get back on track, Cheney criticized Obama for his "low-key" response. Uh, after the shoe bomber, Bush - who was on vacation - took six whole days to respond and Rumsfeld said it was a law enforcement issue. For an influential, or formally so, individual to make such comments is not only irresponsible, but unpatriotic.

For ten years, we liberals, progressives and even centrists have been called unpatriotic and un-American by Cheney, Boehner, and within the last few years, the Tea Partiers. The hypocrisy is glaring.

The shoebomber case was clearly a much lower profile case in terms of planning and potential casualties. That is beside the point, though, here. I am not defending our former vice president nor anyone else on the right. If you read my blog you will see that I earn my stripes as an opponent of “red America.” A free society presupposes that people are going to strongly disagree with each other on basic issues. Therefore a free society requires one to make a distinction between opponents who may be wrong and opponents who are dark, satanic nay even “unpatriotic.” The former you can still hope to maintain a civil functional free and democratic society with. With the later this is not the case and I have to be prepared to fight a literal civil war to the death with. As someone who believes in this country I have to be willing to give Cheney and the rest of the right the benefit of the doubt and assume that they are patriots trying to defend this country to the best of their ability. They may be wrong, but they are the sort of people in the wrong that I can simply vote against come November.
Sean Hannity, to his credit, often made it a point, at least during the years that I listened to him before I got sick of talk radio, that he was not questioning the patriotism of any liberal, just their judgment, and that he liked liberals, would even play golf with them, just as long as they were not in control of his kids or the government.

So why is it patriotism to question Bush but Treason to question Obama?

Seriously. Frank is as guilty of this as anyone on the left.
