The editorial makes a great deal of sense and confirms the reality which I've seen you warn about in several interviews on video -- that there is a rising threat of terrorism on the extreme right. Stack certainly wasn't the last example. Whether he saw himself as a member of the extreme right or the tea party movement is less important that the fact that a lot of them have adopted him as a symbol. It affirms the fact that they see terrorist violence -- even in a form that seems almost calculated to evoke 9/11 -- as legitimate.

To me the tea party movement seems much more diverse and diffuse than Rich depicts it, but if it's so nihilistic and increasingly at odds with the mainstream Republican party, doesn't that present a serious threat to the political power of the latter? Doesn't a movement like this have the potential to peel off a lot of right-wing votes to third candidates (perhaps even to an independent Palin Presidential candidacy in 2012), dooming Republican candidates to defeat so long as the left remains mostly united in support of the Democrats?

Disclaimer: I haven't read Patience with God, but I've read Crazy for God (more than once, in fact), so I'm well aware of where you're coming from. You feared that the transformation of the Christian Right into a political movement led largely by paranoids had created a monster. Is the tea party phenomenon part of that monster?

Hi Infidel 753, thanks for the note, and yes, the Tea Party folks are a spin off of the Religious right. We (sadly) set the stage for these folks many of whom are secular but taking a page from our play book. Best, F

Christianity (Jesus) is the cosmic get-out-of-jail-free card for religious extremists.

Frank Rich deliberately parsed out Stack's note.

Stack was deranged but from the left side of the spectrum.

His manifesto praised Communism but mocked Capitalism.

"As government agencies go, the FAA is often justifiably referred to as a tombstone agency, though they are hardly alone. The recent presidential puppet GW Bush and his cronies in their eight years certainly reinforced for all of us that this criticism rings equally true for all of the government.
[. . .]
The communist creed: From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

The capitalist creed: From each according to his gullibility, to each according to his greed."

Doesn't sound very Tea Partyish to me.

Full text of his note here (PDF file).

Can I be frank, Frank . . .

Franky, in all honesty, has there ever been a time in your life where you not attacking someone. Your inner 'demons,' per say, have yet to be dealt with. I think the paradox might be, if you will, as Oswald Chambers puts it nicely, "Walking in the light means for many of us walking according to our standard for another person." If you have to, fully embrace the Traditions of the Fathers of the Church, do so as they did. But don't think for a moment that this is Byzantium as you seem to do.

You wave your father around like a calling card, and drop names left and right. Seriously, you seem to be 'dancing alone,' whoring your gifts off to the mainstream media. My friend, if you sleep with the 'media whore,' it will come back to haunt you. If your doing it just to promote, then does that make you any better.

But do any Orthodox Church Diocese a favor, stop bragging about your conversion, because what you are doing seems to be more about Frank Schaeffer rapping the Bride's virginity for the sake of prestige, saying you gave her a pearl necklace. What would the Fathers think and say? Well, I would think it would make you speechless, and with a providential slap across the face from St. Nicholas. Not only that, but I would think the Bridegroom, would be very unhappy.

Frank, don't throw your pearls before swines.
